Founder & Developer
Overview
Ontario Referral Network is a healthcare technology initiative designed to simplify referral workflows and reduce administrative burden for Ontario healthcare providers. The project was created in response to the fragmented nature of referral information across hospitals, specialty clinics, and healthcare organizations, where referral requirements, forms, and contact information are often difficult to locate and maintain.
The goal was to develop a searchable, centralized directory that would allow healthcare providers to quickly identify referral destinations, access current referral requirements, and reduce the administrative burden associated with patient referrals.
The concept was inspired by years of firsthand experience supporting referral workflows within Ontario primary care practices.
Key Insight
The greatest barrier to efficient referrals is often not clinical decision-making, but the time required to locate accurate referral information, forms, and eligibility requirements. Small workflow improvements can produce meaningful reductions in administrative burden across the healthcare system.
Key Achievements & Contributions
- Identified a widespread referral workflow challenge affecting healthcare providers across Ontario.
- Designed and developed a searchable referral directory prototype to improve access to referral information.
- Built a structured database capable of organizing referral criteria, forms, contact information, and specialty services.
- Created a user-friendly interface focused on reducing the time required to locate referral requirements.
- Presented the concept to healthcare leaders, physicians, and digital health stakeholders to evaluate potential applications and gather feedback.
- Demonstrated the potential for technology to reduce administrative burden and improve healthcare system navigation.
- Registered and secured the OntarioReferralNetwork.ca domain as part of the project’s long-term vision.
Problem Statement
Healthcare providers frequently spend valuable clinical and administrative time searching for referral forms, eligibility requirements, fax numbers, and specialty clinic information. Referral processes often vary between organizations and are maintained across multiple websites, documents, and directories.
This fragmentation creates inefficiencies, increases administrative workload, and can delay access to care.
Ontario Referral Network was conceived as a practical solution to consolidate this information into a single, searchable resource.
